Time-lapse video documentation
In an effort to document my process and learn from my own workflow, I began screen recording my compositing sessions. Watching the process of creating an image fascinates me, and I enjoy watching my work unfold in the time-lapse videos as much as I enjoy the final piece. It has become a new practice of mine that I hope to continue, as it is always my wish to grow as an artist and learn from my own experiences. Enjoy!
Featuring the first image from her latest body of work Träuma, this episode begins a new series of time-lapse retouching videos that document the artist's work. In this episode she presents her first finished image of the series, "The Colony."
"Träuma" is an artistic study of the artist's own dreams. The images presented are replicated dreams, and each compositional, photographic choice was first determined by the artist's dream. Astin then takes the images of the unconscious and reenacts them before the camera in an effort to record and study her own dream psychology. Through costume, props, and digital compositing, she brings her dreams to life. By analyzing the visual language of dreams and reconstructing them in reality, the artist is mapping the direct flow of the creative unconscious, as it moves like a force to direct the final work. This is the artist's mind transferred directly to paper and screen. It is the visualization of an unconscious mind.
Featuring the next completed image from her latest body of work, Träuma, this episode continues a new series of time-lapse retouching videos that document the artist's work. In this episode she presents her second finished image of the series, "There's a Snake in the Grass."
Featuring the next completed image from her newest body of work, Träuma, this episode continues a new series of time-lapse retouching videos that document the artist's work. In this episode she presents her third finished image of the series, "The House on the Hill."
Though not a new image, this video is the latest time-lapse documentation from the Träuma series began in 2017-19. "Letter to an Old Friend," may not be as visually complex as her other images in the series, but Astin employs mystery and encoded depth in this image through the use of code writing, mathematical organization and simplicity of form. Check out this video for a fourth rendition and update to the Träuma series.
Working with blendmodes in Photoshop is one of the best ways to make quick, easy, and dramatic changes to your composited digital images. Originally designed as a demonstration review for class, this video is a simple but visually pleasing example of how blendmodes can be experimented with when creating images, like this chakra/zen inspired poster!
